Environment Redesign

Legacy VR environment rework covering remeshing, UV cleanup, rebakes, materials and optimisation.

A recurring part of my commercial work has been taking older environments that no longer held up visually or technically, then rebuilding them so they were fit for current products and VR constraints. This example shows one surgical environment before and after that intervention.

What changed

  • Remeshed and cleaned up older assets where geometry was both visually weak and far too heavy, including assets with hundreds of thousands of triangles.
  • Reworked shaders, materials, textures and lighting so the environment read more cleanly and felt more coherent overall.
  • Improved UVs and rebaked where needed so the assets could carry cleaner texture and lighting information.
  • Optimised for VR with shared materials, conservative poly counts and as much baking as possible where runtime work was not needed.

This sort of work sharpened my judgement on the full technical-art chain: when to rebuild, when to simplify, how to improve scene quality without wasting budget, and how to make an older environment feel production-ready again.
